A means of determining the eigenvalues for infinitely long flux tubes is presented. It is found that the eigenvalues are always small (of the order of 0.01 in dimensionless units), even for the fastest helical kink modes (m = 1). It is noted that the more localized higher-m modes have even smaller eigenvalues, and that the most energetic instabilities occur in the Gold-Hoyle (1960) tube with uniform twist. In the context of coronal loops, the results suggest that only a small fraction of the available magnetic energy is released in the linear growth phase.
