Solar Wind: Alfven Waves

A study is made of the propagation conditions of Alfvén waves in an ultra-Alfvén solar-wind flow with allowance for a possible violation of the approximation of geometrical optics. In computations of the effectiveness of linear interaction account is taken of the noncoincidence of the direction of the magnetic field and of the velocity of the medium. It is demonstrated that the amplitudes of Alfvén waves can increase noticeably as a result of linear interaction and of energy exchange with the plasma flow. The region illuminated by Alvén waves issuing from a local source in the solar corona broadens considerably. The results obtained are useful for estimating the intensity distribution of Alfvén waves in the solar wind and for identifying their sources.
