The authors have measured 160 new redshifts for galaxies within 5° of A 194: they list these along with 108 other redshifts in this field. A 194 is a "linear" cluster according to Rood and Sastry (1971) and Struble and Rood (1982, 1984). With 74 cluster members, the authors can show that the galaxy distribution in A 194 is inconsistent with a spherically symmetric King model, even though the model provides a good fit to the azimuthally averaged distribution. The cluster has a well-defined axis. From the virial theorem, the authors find that the mass-to-light ratio of A 194 is M/LB = 190 h M_sun;/L_sun;. They propose a nonparametric test for galaxy-cluster alignment, and use this test along with a χ2 test to search for alignment (or antialignment) of galaxy major axes with the axis of A 194. The data are consistent with isotropy. The authors find no evidence for luminosity segregation, or for significant differences in the velocity or surface distributions of galaxies as a function of morphological type.
