We study the simplest class of Bekenstein-type varying-α models in which the two available free functions (potential and gauge kinetic functions) are Taylor-expanded up to linear order, and show that no such model is consistent with all existing observational results. We discuss possible implications of these findings, showing that either some of these observations are dominated by unknown systematics or our linearity assumption breaks down on a timescale significantly smaller than a Hubble time.
