Scientific paper

This paper investigates Lawden's (1963) equation of the solution for the optimal guidance of a launch vehicle from a planetary surface into orbit. The use of parameterized guidance to find approximate solutions to Lawden's equation is considered along with the linear tangent steering mode and the iterative guidance mode. The existence of linear solutions is examined with the nature of the trajectories compared to ascent to orbit trajectories.
