Spherically symmetric moving shells that surround stars create very different spectral line profiles, depending on the local line width, the velocity gradient, and the emitting layer's geometrical extension and optical thickness. Analytical formulae are given for deriving the main profile characteristics in several limiting cases. An investigation follows of the conditions required for a transition from a quasi-rectangular or parabolic profile to a bi-triangular (saw-toothed) profile with a flux minimum at line center.
