The problem of line formation in the presence of a random velocity field only requires direct computation of the mean value of the radiative intensity. The author shows how the layer addition formalism both provides a physical solution to this problem and can deal with any spatially correlated velocity field. Specific formulae are derived for the LTE case that agree with previous classical results. A solution to the non-LTE case is given in terms of an approximation that extends a solution already proposed in the rigid cell model.
