Observations of the high-column-density Lyman absorption systems in spectra of the high-redshift QSOs PHL 957 and MC 1331+170 are interpreted to set upper limits on the observed number of photons/s/cm2/Å in the bottoms of their Ly α absorption troughs. These limits are then interpreted to yield upper limits on the Ly α flux from the structure containing the absorbing material. The flux limits so derived are used to calculate limits on the surface brightness of the absorbers. These are found to be comparable to the observed Ly α surface brightness of the radio galaxies 3C 239 and 3C 256 which are at similar redshifts, and to the surface brightness of the companion object to the QSO PKS 1614+057 at a redshift of 3.218.
