The spectral variations of the Minnaert darkening coefficient are investigated on the basis of spectrophotometric measurements of the brightness distribution along the equatorial zone and the central meridian of Jupiter in 1976. In contrast to the equatorial zone, the coefficients of limb darkening of the north and south polar regions are almost independent of wavelength and remain close to 0.9-1.0 even at 0.39 micron. The equivalent thickness of H2 in the outer atmosphere above the equatorial zone is estimated as 7.8 + or - 2.0 km-atm, while the lower limit, from an analysis of OAO-2 data, is about 5.5 + or - 0.7 km-atm. The results of photometry in the near ultraviolet and measurements of latitude variations of CH4 absorption contradict the assumption of an increase in the optical depth of the outer atmosphere toward the poles of Jupiter derived by a number of investigators on the basis of polarimetric observations.
