The principle of operation and the properties of optical fiber amplifiers based on a fiber doped with erbium and powered by tiny laser diode chips are discussed. The Er-doped fibers powered by laser chips are revolutionizing the way signals are regenerated for transcontinental communications and for fast data transmission over fiber-optic networks that carry vast quantities of information to thousands of users. A trans-Pacific cable is being presently developed on the basis of Er-doped fibers. Another system that could benefit from Er-doped fiber amplifiers is a broadcast network for high-definition television. According to recent estimates, such a system could transmit signals as far as 25 kilometers and could reach as many as 10 million users.
