The measurement of continuous thermal emission, corresponding to the distribution of continuous radiative energy, is discussed. Knowledge of the temperature of a body in thermodynamic equilibrium, such as a black body, provides information including the degree of ionization and the velocity distribution, while the black body laws of Planck, Wien and Stephen Boltzmann permit temperature determination from photon-emitting objects. The different temperature values obtained for the sun indicate that it cannot be exactly described as a black body. 2.6-mm observations of Orion revealed two molecular clouds, with the origin of two IR compact sources located in the 400-micron emitting region thought to be the thermal emission from hot dust in the clouds. Questions concerning the nature of background radiation are also considered.
