The observational objectives of the PAMELA space telescope, launched the 15th of June 2006, are to measure the spectra of antiprotons, positrons and nuclei in a wide range of energies, to search for primordial antimatter as well as the determination of light nuclei fluxes from hydrogen to oxygen in a wide energy range and with very high statistics. Data gathered with the PAMELA instrument will deal with a wide range of fundamental issues like the understanding of the acceleration, propagation and trapping mechanism of cosmic rays in our Galaxy. In this paper preliminary results on the charge discrimination capabilities of PAMELA for light nuclei will be presented.
