The period variation of VW Cep, a W UMa-type eclipsing binary, is discussed and a noteworthy difference between the light curves obtained for the star in 1971 and 1978 is shown. The (O-C) diagram shows sudden increases and decreases in the period; the physical implications of this finding and of the light curve variations are discussed in detail. A correlation between the light curve variations and period changes exists which is interpreted as a mass exchange between both components during very short time intervals. This may be due to VW Cep being in marginal contact, which would make the system rather unstable with respect to the direction of mass transfer. The difference between the depths of the two minima shows irregular changes, while that between the heights of the two maxima shows a long-term variation on which irregular fluctuations are imposed.
