A Mars reserach approach is described, which is correlated with research on the earth system. A programmatic plan after the initial exploration phase is discussed. Both result in a broad field of potential research topics. The answer to the central question concerning the existence of life on Mars will not conclude this theme, but will open a new world for discovery.
