A Rayleigh lidar system has been operated at Frascati (42 deg N, 13 deg E) since 1988. Lidar measurements of air density in the middle atmosphere are described. This technique allows retrieval of temperature with accuracy and vertial resolution higher than satellite based instruments, pushing the sounding limit up to approximately 100 km altitude. Sixty temperature observations recorded at Frascati, between November 1988 and November 1989 are reported. With a vertical resolution of 2.1 km, 2 h measurements show an average error of approximately 0.5 C at 50 km and 9 C at 80 km. Retrieval method and causes of error are presented. Comparisons with satellite and other lidar temperature soundings are proposed. Middle-atmosphere temperature patterns during winter 1988-1989 are discussed. In terms of stratospheric warmings, this winter appears not to be an extreme one. Nevertheless, an intense wave activity is noticed to develop, in particular during the months of December 1988 and January 1989.
