Prof. S. Chapman, through whom Dr. D. F. Martyn has forwarded this letter, remarks that equations (1) and (2) imply horizontal inducing motions due to the sun, in the D-, E- and F-layers, which are in phase with one ariother, and lunar tidal horizontal motions which in the D-layer are opposite in phase to those in the E- and F-layers; on present knowledge (cf. Nature, 159, 357; 1947), this does not seem to be excluded.
