The paper summarizes the history of the 6-m-diameter Large Azimuthal Telescope (built on the slope of the Pastukhov Mountain in the northern Caucasus) which started operation in 1975, with particular attention given to the main causes of its relatively small success. These causes, besides the location of the telescope on a windy mountain slope and the relatively high humidity of the region, include: (1) the lack of high-quality CCDs; (2) the remoteness of the observatory from centers of civilization; and (3) the small number (about 50) of astronomers and highly qualified engineers among a vastly larger number of technical and support personnel, leading to a general lowering of the level of human interaction. The overall cause of the small success achieved by the Soviet astronomy is ascribed to the fact that the heads of the observatory orient their decisions based on recommendations of academicians rather than on those of actively working astronomers.
