Comets are the remainders of primitive matter from which the solar system was formed. They played an essential role not only during the formation of the solar system, but perhaps also in the biological evolution of the earth. Comets are thought to come from two clouds in the periphery of the solar system. From time to time, gravitational perturbations eject a comet from one of these clouds into the solar system. It is believed that a significant fraction of the terrestrial organic matter, which gave rise to life on earth, could have been introduced by comets. This article is devoted to the presentation of comets in their most general aspect. The presentation is given in the form of a scenario reporting the formation, the life, and the death of these objects. All the hypotheses are based on the most accepted theories in cometary science at present.
