In order to find and follow a star to be observed, its apparent HIPPARCOS magnitude must be known in advance with an accuracy better than 0.5 mag. Evidently the star must also be brighter than the satellite detection threshold. The variables are classified into 7 groups which are defined in this paper. So each star can be marked by a variability flag in the Input Catalogue. The statistics by flag is given for the stars of the GCVS and the NSV.
