The antenna is the first element in the reception chain and makes the transition between free space and the receiver. Antenna types are virtually infinite. Antennae for radioastronomy, either single dishes, interferometers or arrays, do not differ much from antennae for other applications. The various terms and definitions used in the antenna field and necessary to specify an antenna or to correctly understand its characteristics are explained and detailed.
