Leonids: Light Curves
Scientific paper
We present light curve results from Leonid shower meteors of recent years (1998-2001). Airborne and ground based observations were performed, collecting video data using image-intensified monochrome charged-coupled device (CCD) camera systems. These systems provided an approximate limiting stellar magnitude range of +8m to +6m and fields of view of approximately 16.0°×12.0° to a wider angle 40°×35°. Sampling meteoroids from various cometary returns (ranging from 1767 to 1932), several hundred meteors were recorded and subsequent light curve analysis performed. A set of modified F- parameters was used to distinguish differences in overall light curve shapes. These computed values ranged between 0.49 and 0.66 for the individual annual showers (were F=0.5 is defined as a symmetrical curve, F<0.5 an early skewed and F>0.5 a late skewed). Such findings indicate morphological differences between meteoroids of different ejection epochs. This alteration in meteoroid structure may very well be attributed to space exposure. We also note the presence of very distinctive features among yearly events, 1998 was characterised by early skewed curves while 1999 had unusual "flat topped" curves.
