An introduction to (supersymmetric) gauge theories and their applications is followed by a discussion of the recent solution of {\cal N} = 2 theories by means of direct instanton counting. The gauge/string duality in the context of BPS states and topological strings is reviewed, and the quantum gravitational foam picture emerging out of gauge-theoretic considerations is explained.
Lectures given at the RTN Winter School on Strings, Supergravity and Gauge Fields, which took place in Barcelona, on 12 16 January 2004.
