An analysis is made of the latitudinal distribution of the meridional-drift velocity of auroral arcs in the midnight sector of the auroral zone. It is shown that this velocity increases from 100 m/s at the southern boundary of the auroral oval to 400 m/s at its near-polar boundary. The motions of arcs observed in the ionosphere are projected along the geomagnetic field lines into the plasma sheet, which is used to study the distribution of the Y-component of the electric field in the magnetotail.
