The considered investigation makes use of infrared absorption spectroscopy, utilizing as a radiation source the sun either at sunset or at sunrise. On the basis of simultaneous spectral observations of HNO3, HCl, and HF, it was found that the vertical column density above 11.5 km increases from low latitude in both hemispheres for the three species. The ratio between the minimum, near the equator, and the large values observed at high latitudes is 17 plus or minus 5 for HNO3. The corresponding value for HCl appears also to be larger than 10. At high latitude, the largest vertical column densities are observed in the northern hemisphere for HNO3.
