Experimental data on the coincidence of the latitude of the polar wall of the main ionospheric trough with the position of the equatorial boundary of the diffuse precipitation zone of low-energy electrons indicate that this latitude can be used as an index of geomagnetic activity level. This index has a determinate time lag on the average, can be measured directly from the ground or from satellites, and has a clear physical meaning.
