Principal component analysis has been used to define the main geological units present in the Alphonsus region of the moon by means of both spectral and geological criteria. This analysis has yielded a deeper understanding of the regional geology, leading to the production of a simplified geologic map; the composition of the dark halos surrounding craters on the floor of Alphonsus resembles that of Mare Nubium.
