The article discusses the basic principles and applications of laser telemetry as applied to spatial geodesy. The operation is based on the precise measurement of the round-trip travel time of light beamed at a target. In contrast to methods involving radar or photographic techniques, the measurements have a constant error and the results are not influenced by the characteristics of the medium through which the beam passes. A mobile laser telemetry station located in Spain is described. It basically consists of the laser system, the reception system (telescope and photomultiplier), and a warning and data processing system (equipped with a minicomputer and telemetry equipment with nanosecond precision). It is noted that the results are largely a function of meteorological conditions.
