The results of laser radar studies of atmospheric aerosols believed due to the El Chichon eruption are described. The observations were made in the U.K. at 52 deg 25 arcmin N, 4 deg 4 arcmin W during 45 nights from November 1982 to February 1983, and showed enhanced concentrations of aerosols at heights up to about 30 km. The molecular densities from various models were used to examine the range of variability which might be expected in the Rayleigh scatter signals. The results indicate a very pronounced variability in the cloud, both on a night-to-night basis and within given nights, the peak value for the ratio of backscatter from aerosols to that from molecules varying between two and twelve. Certain features of the short-term changes indicate apparent vertical motions.
