Development of a 1000 megabit/sec laser communication system for satellite links, utilizing a Nd:YAG laser, is described. The 405B program was initiated in 1971 and a space launch is scheduled for 1979. The test satellite will be launched into a highly elliptical orbit with apogee at a synchronous altitude (100 W, 60 N every 24 hr) with a 12-hr period. Solar pumping is envisaged for high orbits where exposure to sunlight over extended periods is possible, and flashlamp pumping for low orbits. Major advances have been achieved with the electro-optical modulator and the pulse quaternary modulation format, the precision optical telescope, and integration of optical components into a stable optomechanical package.
