A topic of considerable interest is the day-to-day variability in the development of plasma-density irregularities in the equatorial F region. From a space-weather perspective, we are most concerned with equatorial plasma bubbles (EPBs) because their effects have been found to be most severe and far reaching. There is a consensus view that their development is largely controlled by the post-sunset rise (PSSR) of the F layer. That is, its vigor seems to determine the intensity of the disturbance. On the other hand, there are significant numbers of EPB occurrences that are not predicted solely by the strength of the PSSR, and the uncertainty, on a day-to-day basis, suggests that there is at least one other source that contributes significantly to the development of EPBs. Recent efforts have produced mounting evidence that large-scale wave structure (LSWS) appears to be such a source. Its acceptance, however, has not been immediate or widespread. The reason is that very little is yet known about LSWS, because most sensors in use today are not capable of providing information about LSWS properties. In this presentation, we briefly review our knowledge of LSWS and discuss the possible roles that it is playing as a driver of EPB variability. Most of the new findings have come from total electron content variations measured as a function of longitude, using beacon signals from the Communications/Navigation Outage Forecasting System (C/NOFS) satellite.
