Observations with the Cambridge 5-km Radio Telescope have revealed the existence of tropospheric water-vapor irregularities having scale sizes greater than the maximum baseline of the telescope. Unlike the smaller scale irregularities (0.3-1.2 km) studied previously, they show no marked seasonal or diurnal variations, although there is some evidence that they occur more often and with greater magnitude in the summer months. The effect of these irregularities on aperture synthesis telescopes is to produce radial sidelobes, especially near the main response. They are also a hindrance to the determination of accurate source positions in astrometric programmes.
