An attempt to formulate mathematically the investigation of the filamentary large-scale structure of the Universe is presented, with particular attention to the detection of bound groups, clusters, as well as field (unbound) galaxies, as well as to the analysis of large-scale motions. First, a general definition of the concept of "cluster" is given by means of the theory of dynamical systems. Second, a specific numerical algorithm is developed to decipher the real substructure of clusters from available observational data. Preliminary results of computer experiments are presented, both for toy systems and for a real cluster (Abell 194). The developed "tree-diagram" technique seems especially useful for the analysis of the origin and evolution of clusters of galaxies, as well as for the dark matter problem.
