The propagation of star formation (SF) and the onset of AGN activity episodes are responsible of the injection of vast amounts of energy in the molecular ISM of galaxies. This feedback loop is governed by strong radiation fields (UV and X rays) and large-scale massive gas flows likely associated to shocks. High-resolution observations that directly probe the dense molecular material fueling SF and AGN activity are key if we are to understand if and how accretion can self-regulate in galaxies. We review the results obtained in a survey conducted with the IRAM array where we used SiO lines to identify and image large-scale molecular shocks in a sample of starburst and active galaxies. Large-scale molecular shocks are identified in the different evolutionary stages of the starburst phenomenon represented by the galaxies NGC253, M82 and IC342. Strong circumnuclear SiO emission has been recently mapped in the Seyfert 2 galaxy NGC1068 and in the merger system Arp220. The relevance of mechanical heating has been recently explored in theoretical models as a viable explanation for the `abnormal' chemistry of molecular gas in starburst and active galaxies. These observations reveal the existence of large-scale Mechanical Dominated Regions (MDRs) in galaxies. We discuss how the imprint of dust grain chemistry can be used to identify the mechanisms regulating the feeding and the feedback of activity in the different galaxy environments studied in this survey.
