Geomagnetic disturbances in the interval July 14--16, 2000 were the largest to date in the 23rd solar cycle. The disturbances in the magnetosphere and ionosphere caused a number of anomalies in the operation of several different technical systems. The disturbances in the ionosphere electrical current system over the east coast of North America and the Atlantic Ocean produced some of largest geopotentials recorded by measurement instruments on long telecommunications cables in the last sixty years. Nevertheless, the geopotential of ~ 0.05 mV/km peak-to-peak that was measured across the route of the fiber optic TAT-8 cable (Tuckerton, NJ to France and England) was less than half that measured across the same route during the March 1989 event. The details of the measurements of the geomagnetic potential during the event, as well as of magnetic fields on both sides of the Atlantic, will be presented. Comparisons will be made with other large geopotentials that have been measured across other communication cable routes since the large geomagnetic storm of March 1940.
