The design characteristics of a large open telescope (LOT) are: (i) an
open tower with only pure translations of the platform under wind load;
(ii) an open telescope construction with extremely stiff geometry and
drives; (iii) simple optics with easy aligning and testing, but
nevertheless suitable for large auxiliary equipment like spectrographs.
