We performed a laboratory study on the topography of particulate surfaces over spatial scales from 2 to 300 μm. The surfaces prepared for the measurements consist of particles of meteorites, terrestrial rocks and synthesized materials, having size of 1.5-220 μm. We found that the surface roughness and the size of constituent particles have positive correlation. We derived an empirical relation between the surface roughness and the particle size, which will be useful in studies on light-scattering, thermal radiation, and mechanical properties of particulate layer.
