Results are reported for laboratory tests of a beam plasma discharge (BPD) whose dimensions are on the order of several meters, in both a homogeneous atmosphere and a jet of neutral gas, where the beam is obtained by the operation of an electron gun of the type used in rocket experiments. Measurements are given of the glow intensity, electromagnetic field intensity and spectrum, electron density, and scattered electron flux parameters, along with photographs of the BPD. The BPD ignition threshold is determined as a function of gas pressure and beam parameters, a possible process of BPD initiation is hypothesized.
