We will report recent measurements on the growth of ice from the vapor phase and ion irradiation, where we determined the density (porosity) of ice and its dependence of growth condition (direction of incident water flux, substrate temperature, annealing temperature, ion irradiation), and the emission of oxygen during ion irradiation. We will discuss the different implications of our results for the icy satellites of Jupiter and Saturn. Supported by NASA, NSF and Cassini mission
