We discuss the results of experiments aimed at studying the spectral and structural modifications induced in carbonaceous grains of astrophysical interest by thermal annealing, UV and ion irradiation and exposure to gas. A good understanding of the reasons for the origin and the observed variations with environmental conditions of the UV extinction bump profile and of the 3.4 μ m absorption band has been obtained on the basis of the simulation experiments.
