Since the development of powerful ion sources about 20 years ago, studies of excited state formation in highly charged ions following charge exchange have continued to develop. The techniques of translational energy spectroscopy, photon emission spectroscopy, and more recently recoil ion momentum spectroscopy, have been used to provide fundamental understanding and data for the astrophysics and fusion communities. Despite this progress, studies of collisions in molecular targets common in cometary and planetary atmospheres such as H2O, OH, CO, CO2, O2 and N2 remain scarce. The recent interest in charge exchange as a source of X-ray emission in the solar system has stimulated efforts by several groups. Many of these studies are complementary and by working together will hopefully yield extensive line emission data for use in the latest models of X-ray emission in the solar system.
