Microwave spectrometric observations were made of CH2 atoms produced by interacting fluorine atoms with CH4. The data were collected at the frequencies 68.37 GHz, 69.01 GHz, and 70.68 GHz to study the N(KK) = 4(04)-3(13) transition of X(3)BlCH2, a reaction which is thought to be present in interstellar clouds. The occurrence of the methylene radical from chemical constituents of interstellar stars was confirmed, and far-IR astronomical observations at 444 GHz are recommended for detecting the transitions in known molecular clouds.
