Preliminary results for refractive indices of liquid methane and ethane at cryogenic temperatures close to proposed temperatures for the surface of Titan are presented. The results for methane are compared to previously published results. The determinations were conducted using a prototype of the Huygens surface science package refractometer subsystem, based on a linear critical angle device. The principle of operation of the device and the experimental procedure are outlined.
