A free radical C4S has been detected for the first time by using a Fabry-Perot-type Fourier-transform microwave spectrometer combined with a pulsed discharge nozzle. Rotationally cooled (about 1-2 K) C4S in its ground electronic state (3Sigma-) has been produced by a discharge in a supersonic free jet of Ar-diluted samples of C2H2 and CS2. The observed spectrum of C4S in the 5-24 GHz region was analyzed to determine the rotational constant and the spin-spin interaction constant. Toward the astronomical detection, transition frequencies of C4S in the millimeter-wave region are tabulated.
