Cometary Tails: Plasma Tails, Motions: Plasma Tails
Scientific paper
The close approach of comet 1996 B2 (Hyakutake) was observed in very good sky conditions during the night between March 24 and 25. A sequence of photographs taken with a 180 mm f/2,8 telephoto lens shows a knot with a high proper motion in the plasma tail related to a disconnection event. The authors find that the average velocity of the plasma knot was 32.3 km/sec on March 25.0, 53.6 km/sec on March 25.7 and 76.1 km/sec on March 26.5. The average acceleration due to the solar wind was close to 0.0003 km/sec. Extrapolating the data one also finds that the beginning of the disconnection event was around March 24.7.
