Extra-Solar Planets: Evaporation

Scientific paper

An approach that leads to a scientific discovery is presented here. An experiment or an observation in a new scientific domain, is never a trivial process. The path that leads, then, from the observation to the scientific discovery is even more crooked and full of obstacles. We present here the detailed discovery steps through our experience with the planet HD~209458b, a so called ``hot Jupiter'', known to transit in front of its parent star. Our intention was to observe the upper part of its atmosphere. As a result, we were able to show that the atmosphere of this planet was unexpectedly extended and in the process of evaporating. For this reason, the planet was nicknamed ``Osiris'', as the Egyptian god who lost part of his body. Additional observations performed with HST telescope not only confirmed our previous discovery, but indicated that the atmosphere was actually blowing off. This phenomenon, never observed before, may be described as a violent hydrodynamic escape mechanism.
