Lunar studies have suggested that the outer portions of the moon underwent an early differentiation during the solidification of a primordial magma ocean. In the present model, the magma ocean dregs were burried by their own compressibility and density during the Archaean, surfacing only occasionally as komatiite. The model may be tested by satisfaction of numerous criteria, including what is known about constraints on the earth's thermal budget in the Archaean and the chemical evolution of komatiitic liquids with time. The simplest and most quickly implementable test would involve the measurement of komatiitic liquid density to 100 kbar.
