This paper gives a variety of arguments to support two contentions: (1) the morphology of an extragalactic jet, and in particular the appearance of flaring, knots, and wiggles, does not necessarily imply that it is confined; and (2) stochastic effects may be fundamental to understanding jets, whether or not they are free. These issues are demonstrated to be related through a simple computer simulation that shows that seemingly significant structures can result from random effects. Some specific sources are examined in light of these ideas. The jet width data for the jet in NGC 6251 are shown to be consistent with a model in which most of the jet is free, and the variations of this jet's properties with resolution are used to suggest a 'fractal' structure for the jet. Also, a number of reasons are put forward to question the 'reality' of the periodicity of knots in sources such as M87.
