The linear theory of stability of a plasma column with flow is investigated starting with MHD equations. The dispersion curves are calculated from the derived dispersion equation and these findings are used to estimate the effect of a flow in the linear theory. It is determined that a flow promotes instability, as does the toroidal component of the magnetic field, in that the rate of growth of instability may be increased by one or two orders of magnitude and the wavelength range for instability is also increased. It is found that, when the flow velocity is large, the m = 0 and m = 1 modes may appear almost together. These results are utilized to provide a qualitative interpretation of three typical solar events.
