A high-resolution survey, sara (Segmentation Ancienne de la Ride Atlantique) collected Sea Beam bathymetry, magnetic, gravity and seismic reflection data on the flanks of the Mid-Atlantic Ridge between 28° and 29°N. This survey was designed to complement a portion of an on-axis study carried out between the Atlantis and Kane transform faults, which revealed the configuration of the spreading axis. The sara survey extends this coverage to an age of approximately 10 Ma on either flank. A sinuous isochron pattern was established from anomaly identification made using a two-dimensional model. The plate tectonic reconstruction, based solely on this isochron pattern, provides an accurate kinematic description of the relative motion between the African and North American plates within the zone. Our results, confirmed by data from the famous area and a flowline comparison with the trend of the Kane fracture zone, show that a change in axial orientation, spreading direction and spreading rate occurred at approximately anomaly 4 time (7.01 Ma). This was coincident with the appearance of a new axial segment. All the axial segments observed have changed length continously during the last 10 Ma by advancing or retreating at one or both ends in any combination so as to leave non-parallel trails on the flanks that do not align with either the spreading direction or with the absolute plate motion. Factors contributing to the sinuous magnetic anomaly pattern are discussed.
