Gas at high galactic latitudes is observed to have a large range of radial velocities. To understand its kinematics, various aspects have to be considered, including observational selection effects, as well as the absence of information about the velocity in the plane of the sky and about distances. The statistics of the velocities of both high- and intermediate-velocity (HV and IV) gas are presented. Simple models for their distribution and motion can help to interpret the observed velocities.
